P. 9
The Nile flooded at the same time every
year and lasted for nearly 3 months before
returning to its normal flow and size.
To help them know when the flood was
about to happen, the Egyptians came up
with a way to measure the height of the
Nile which was a series of steps.
When the level of the water rose, they
could tell how high the river was by
counting the steps. Egyptians depended
greatly on these floods because it irrigated
their fields.
When the water returned to normal, it left
fertile soil which was black and rich in
minerals that farmers used to grow their
crops.
