EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Batik and Tenun industry are similar to textile manufactory in the
aspect that they use similar dye chemical in colouring process. Both
industries are well commercialized and contributed positively to the
economic growth of the east coast region of Malaysia. However,
synthetic dye that is widely used in the textile industry contains 29
                                            hazardous chemicals such as dioxin.
Dioxin is a carcinogenic substance and possible hormone disrupter
that can cause cancer. Statistic shows that a total of 21,773 cancer
cases were diagnosed among Malaysians in the peninsular Malaysia
in 2006. Due to the concern on environmental impact and passion to
green technology adoption, subsequently there is a surging demand
for natural dye colouring fabric. Therefore, natural dye is seen as an
alternative substance that can substitute synthetic dye.
However, natural dye that can be produced from plant, arthropods,
marine invertebrates, algae, bacteria and fungi have limitations of
which they are expensive, low quality (colour integrity) and only small
amount of the colour can be produced at a time. Thus, the urgency
of this study is to produce an economical and high quality of “green”
natural dye for Tenun fabric manufacturing industry.
