Leroy Chapman Jr.
Leroy Chapman Jr. is Deputy Managing Editor of The Atlanta Journal-Constitu-
tion, where he oversees reporting teams that cover state and local politics, local
news, public safety and courts, schools, and other coverage.
Leroy is a 1994 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of
Arts degree. During college he began his career in journalism with The Sumter
Item and later joined The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., as an assistant
wire desk editor. He went on to become a business and sports reporter before
moving to The Greenville News as a business reporter.

Deputy Managing Editor In 1999, he became a member of the editorial board and in 2000, he was
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution promoted to Associate Editorial Page Editor. He was the first African American in
the newspaper’s 126-year history to become a member of the opinion writing
staff. He returned to The State as a government and politics editor and built
a successful political blog, S.C. Politics Today. In 2011 he joined The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution as a story editor and served in several management roles
before joining the leadership team as a Deputy Managing Editor in 2015. His
teams in Atlanta have won local, regional and national journalism awards.
Leroy is married and has three children and lives in Gwinnett County.
