Meteorology
A runway is inspected when weather conditions or other factors suggest
changes to the runway state, or if pilot reports indicate that the runway
condition deviates from the previously communicated runway condition code
(RWYCC).
3.9.7.2 Runway Condition Report
The airport operator assesses the runway surface condition for each third of
the runway using a runway condition report (RCR).
The ATS unit can report the runway surface conditions in two ways:
- For each third of the runway
- For the entire runway if contamination, depth, coverage, and RWYCC are
the same across each third of the runway.
The illustration here
shows the system:
The runway condition report contains information such as the airport's ICAO
code, the current time, the runway, RWYCC, the percentage of coverage, depth,
and a description of the contaminants' condition.
If the runway is reduced, the RWYCC describes the condition for the reduced
runway.
The runway condition code (RWYCC) is indicated using numbers in accordance
with the runway condition assessment matrix (RCAM):
Frost = hoarfrost
Slush = slush
Compacted snow = compacted snow
Dry snow = dry snow, powder snow
Wet snow = slush that can be formed into snowballs without water
drifting from it
Contaminated = more than 25% covered
