Meteorology
3.10 Climatology
Climatology includes the study of meteorological elements that characterize
average and extreme atmospheric conditions for a specific geographical area
and a specific time period.
The climate of an area is a combination of many meteorological elements, e.g.
temperature, precipitation, wind, cloud cover.
According to the Köppen system, the earth can be divided into 5 main climate
zones.
- The tropical rainy climate
- The subtropical dry climate
- The temperate rainy climate
- The continental climate of coniferous forests
- The polar climate zone
3.10.1 The climate in Europe
Below is a division of Europe into climate zones.
As you can see, there is a temperate rainy
climate in most of Europe.
A temperate rainy climate is characterized
by mild temperatures, significant
amounts of precipitation fairly evenly
distributed over the year, and at least one
month a year with temperatures below
o
o
18 C, but not below – 3 C.
The climate type is due to the maritime
influence.
