Principles of flight
On most aircraft, it is
necessary for the pilot to apply
a little pressure to the rudder
pedal on the same side as the
turn to overcome the induced
aileron drag and perform
coordinated turns.
5.6.1.3 Rudder
The rudder is operated via the pedals.
If the right pedal is pressed forward (the situation on the aircraft on the left), a
lateral force will occur on the tail, which turns it to the left.
The primary effect is that the nose of the aircraft turns to the right.
Secondarily, the left wing gains more speed, and thus more lift, which results in
a bank to the same side as the turn.
On some aircraft, the aileron and rudder are partially interconnected to reduce
the secondary effects.
