Flight performance and planning
The figure on the previous page shows curves for climbs at different speeds with
full weight and performed at different altitudes.
VY → best rate of climb – here the most for per minute is achieved
VX → best angle of climb – used when climbing over obstacles
The diagram below shows how many fpm (feet per minute) one can climb at
different speeds (full weight).
On the curves there are 2 significant points Vx and Vy.
- Vy, best climb rate, e.g. an indicated rate of climb at MSL of 90 Kts gives a
climb of 1400 fpm
- Vx, best climb angle, e.g. a speed of 74 Kts (indicated) at MSL gives the best
angle of climb at a climb of approx. 1240 fpm
