8.3.1.1 Damage Tolerance
There is a concept called "damage tolerance."
Damage Tolerance is the ability of the structure to withstand expected impacts
in the presence of metal fatigue, corrosion and harmful effects, until such
damage is identified through inspections or malfunctions and repaired again.

8.3.2 The fuselage
There are two different basic methods for constructing aircraft fuselages.
8.3.2.1 Truss fuselages
On older aircraft, truss fuselages were made. These could be built from thin steel
tubes. The outer covering was canvas (seconite) or fabric.
On the right you see such a
truss structure of steel
tubes.
A tube can be bent, but it is
difficult to compress or
pull over.
The strength therefore lies
in building the structure as a whole lot of triangles as shown.
The skin was canvas.
