In the table below you can see different types of slots and the lift increase that
is in relation to the basic profile.
At the top, the basic profile,
then five different types of
flaps.
The three lower figures show
leading edge slots.
As you can see from the
table, slots give a larger
critical angle of attack.
8.3.7.5 Slats
Slats (boards) are also placed on the wing leading edge. It can be slid diagonally
downwards and increase the curvature of the profile. The purpose of slats is to
increase the critical angle of attack.
Slats are mostly used on larger aircraft.
Leading edge slats on commercial aircraft and fighters move diagonally forward
and downward and lie close to the leading edge of the wing without forming
slots.
