Aircraft general knowledge
Mechanically actuated flaps are operated with a larger flap lever, which can have
different positions.
Flaps increase the curvature of the profile, giving you extra lift. This enables a
lower speed approach and, as a result, a shorter landing distance.
Fowler flaps also increase the area of the profile, and if they are designed as
slotted fowler flaps, the airflow can be forced to follow the profile and thereby
move the point where the airflow cannot follow the wing further aft.
Deploying the flaps at too high a speed can damage the flaps!
If you have to abort an approach for landing and have full flaps, then apply full
throttle and accelerate the aircraft and then follow the procedure described in
the aircraft manual.
8.3.7.4 Slots
Slots are placed on the leading edge of the wing. It can be a fixed slot or a slot
that is formed by part of the wing leading edge moving forward, thereby leaving
a slot.
Slots is designed as a constant slot along all or part of the leading edge of the
wing. Slots can also be formed when a movable wing leading edge (slat) is moved
forward, either automatically or manually.
The wing leading edge is sucked forward when the angle of attack becomes large
enough. The air will move through the slot to the upper side of the wing and
smooth the airflow, so that the lift is maintained.
Slots make it possible to fly at a higher angle of attack.
