If the steering wheel or stick is moved sideways, this moves the ailerons, so that
one goes up and the other goes down and vice versa.
If you step forward on the pedal on the right side, it automatically goes back on
the left side. The pedals are connected by wires to the rudder.
The system for operating the rudders is shown below.
The figure below shows what is actually meant when you say "fly by wire".
Wire also means electrical
wire, and when you activate
the controls, voltage is sent
to an actuator in the
relevant control.
The system enables connection with the autopilot. In the newest aircraft, fiber
optic cables are used.
Before flying, check that the controls are working correctly and can be moved
freely to all extreme positions.
After flying and parking into the wind, control locks are applied to prevent the
controls from moving in windy weather. Chocks are placed around the wheels
and the aircraft is tied down to the ground (follow POH).
