Aircraft general knowledge
Furthermore, it ensures that the wheel does not turn sideways – except in cases
where the joint is pulled around using the nosewheel control from the pedals in
the aircraft.
A shimmy damper ensures that the wheel does not wobble, even if it is landed
in positions where the aircraft's longitudinal axis is not in the aircraft's direction
of movement. If shimmy occurs from the nosewheel, it is relieved by pulling back
the steering wheel.
Check carefully before flying that there is suspension in the nosewheel and that
there is approx. 10 cm of free metal tube when there is no weight on the
nosewheel in addition to the approx. 200 kg that the engine weighs.
If you feel shimmy in the nose wheel during landing, pull the
steering wheel back to reduce the weight on the nose wheel.
When the speed decreases, the nose wheel will hopefully
settle gently without the vibrations.
Brake moderately, braking too hard can cause the wheel to stop, creating flat
spots on the tire, or the tire can rotate in relation to the rim.
If you discover that the rim looks like in this picture, you can forget about flying
for a long time!
Seen from the other side, there was nothing to
notice. The plane had landed hard and diagonally
on the nose wheel, and damage had occurred to
the fire bulkhead.
The repair amounted to 280,000 DKK.
