9.4 Flight maps

Different types of maps are used in connection with flying, depending on how

far and where in the world you are flying.

9.4.1 Map drawing

A cartographer's task is to depict the globe, or a part of it, on a piece of

rectangular paper. The cartographer must therefore make a representation from

the (almost) spherical surface of the earth to a flat image.

Such a representation is called a projection from a sphere to a plane.

The first question the cartographer must ask himself is: "what requirements must

the map meet?"
