Sunrise is when the upper edge of the sun appears and can be seen to the east.

Sunset is when the upper edge of the sun disappears below the horizon to the

                west.

The twilight period, when it is still light enough to fly according to the rules for
VFR day flight, starts when the

center of the sun is 6⁰ below the

horizon to the east and ends

when the center of the sun is 6⁰

below the horizon to the west.

The earliest start and latest end

times of the flight are found in

VFG ENR 1.2-6 and on the back

                side of the ICAO map.

                9.3.4.1 Twilight and night

The time when the sun's light is reflected is called twilight.

The twilight period lasts until the center of the sun is 6⁰ below the horizon. After

that it is night. The night ends at the beginning of morning twilight, that is, when

the center of the sun is 6⁰ below the horizon.

                The day starts at sunrise

The duration of twilight depends partly on the season and partly on the

geographical location of the place, since the rotation of the Earth on its axis

causes the sun to have different sunrise and sunset times at the same place

                throughout the year.

The permitted time of VFR flight therefore depends on time and place.
