9.3 Time
Time is given based on the position of the sun in the sky.
In 24 hours, the earth has rotated 360 degrees, which gives 15 degrees per hour.
When the sun is vertically above Greenwich in London, it is 12 o’clock, and it is
noon. What time is it in Denmark?
Geographically, western Jutland is located at approximately 8⁰30 east longitude,
and the easternmost point on Bornholm is at approximately 15⁰ east longitude.
In school you may have sung “In the east the sun rises”, and based on what you
can deduce from this, the sun has been highest in the sky over Bornholm
(Gudhjem) 1 hour earlier than it is over Greenwich.
So, when it is 12 o’clock in Greenwich, it is 13 o’clock in Gudhjem.
The fact that the day dawns first in the east and that the sun sets at the latest
time in the west is what we use when we have to determine the daily period for
VFR flights.
In relation to the easternmost position on Bornholm and the westernmost
position in Jutland, there is a gap of about 7⁰ and this gives a time difference of
about 28 minutes.
The figure here shows the time difference
between Holstebro and Nykøbing Falster.
It is 13 minutes.
