This plane runs at the earth's surface through Greenwich in England and is here

called the 0-meridian.

The meridians lie analogously
to this line all the way around

the earth. These lines are also

called longitudes.

Length is measured from the
o
0 -meridian east or west and
o
180 each way.

9.2.1.4 Position indication

The position is indicated in:

Latitude measured from the Equator north or south

and

Longitude measured from the Prime Meridian east or west

The figure below shows the grid laid over the globe with indication of longitude

and latitude (meridians and parallels of latitude), north and south latitude, east

and west longitude, the Equator and the 0-meridian.

The position is indicated in degrees, minutes + possibly in seconds.

- 1 (1 degree) = 60’ (60 min)
- 1’ = 60’’ (60 sec)

Also, in northern (N) or southern (S) latitude.

And in western (W / W) or eastern (Ø / E) longitude.
