                Point A in the

                illustration here

                has the position:

                   o
                         o
                15 N 60 E

                9.2.1.5 Distance calculation using coordinates

When we know the position of two points, we can find the distance between the
points based on their coordinates alone, if they are at the same longitude.

                We remember that:
                   - degrees can be divided into minutes and seconds

                      o
                   - 1 (1 degree) = 60’ (60 min)
                   - 1 minute = 1 NM (measured along a meridian)

                Problem:

                                                     o
                                                                    o
What is the distance between 12 50’N and 13 35’N?
                Solution:

                                   o
                                                o
                    - Distance 12 50’N to 13 00’N = 10’ (10 minutes) = 10 NM
                                   o
                                                o
                    - Distance 13 00’N to 13 35’N = 35’ (35 minutes) = 35 NM
                    - Total distance = 10 NM + 35 NM = 45 NM
