Example:
o
o
TH = 230 and MH = 233 . What is the variation?
Solution: We have the following arrangement:
o
For the calculation to work, you must subtract 3. The variation is -3 .
Example:
o
o
o
TH = 233 , Variation -3 , CH = 234 . What is deviation?
Solution: First find MH: Thus, we have:
o
So, from MH you must subtract 3 and get the result 233. MT is therefore 236 .
From MH (236) to CH (234). Thus, we have:
o
To get from CH to MH, we must add 2. The deviation is therefore +2 .

In practice, we go from right to left.
- TT (True Track) is measured in maps
- Variation is corrected
- We then have MT (Magnetic Track).
- When we get out in the plane, our magnetic values are corrected for
Deviation according to the deviation table, and we have our CT (Compass
Track), which we perform the flight according to (with or without
directional gyro).
Many times, you only need to calculate from True to magnetic values, then you
just use the last part of the "formula" namely Men Vote Twice.
