You need to include international investments in your portfolio.
Many Americans fear investing overseas, thinking that investing
outside the country is risky and unnecessary. They shy away
from diversifying their portfolios to include stocks of companies
that are not based in the United States. This is like going to the
grocery store to buy food for dinner and then only choosing
goods from the first couple of aisles. You may be missing out on
some terrific opportunities by investing only domestically.
In the past, investing only domestically may have worked
well. Now, as the U.S. economy matures and other countries
start to emerge economically, there is an enormous amount of
opportunity in markets across the world. As Fareed Zakaria says
in his book The Post-American World, Release 2.0, “It’s not so
much about the decline of America as the rise of other countries
and economies around the world.” 1
