Sequential Batch Reactors (SBR)
SBR Operation
SBR’s require preliminary treatment, including debris, rag and grit removal.
Without preliminary treatment the SBR tanks would quickly lose capacity due to
sediment accumulation.
SBR’s require support systems, including automatic actuator valves which open
and close to initiate a cycle or phase of a cycle. SBR’s need a source of air provided
by blowers.
SBR treatment can be enhanced with flocculants (metal salts) or coagulants
(polymer).
As with conventional activated sludge, SBR’s must maintain a calculated Sludge
Retention Time (SRT) achieved by daily calculated wasting. The SBR can remove
the excess biomass by pumping to a sludge thickening device, digestor, or by
offsite transport.
