VAUCLUSE, PROVENCE – Hotel Crillon le Brave: This Relais & Chateaux property
features an informal, relaxed environment with wonderful views of the countryside of the
Vaucluse. Situated 25 miles northeast of Avignon, in the heart of some of the finest vineyards in
Rhone wine country, Crillon le Brave is a real charmer. The property is located at the summit of
the tiny village of the same name, not far from majestic Mont Ventoux. In the late nineteenth
century, the village council decided to honor their heroic Lord, Louis de Balbe de Crillon, also
known as "le brave des braves" (brave among the brave), by naming the village "Crillon-le-
Brave." The Hotel Crillon-le-Brave
occupies a cluster of seven, centuries-
old buildings linked by narrow
cobbled alleyways, secret gardens and
spectacular terraces. There are 32
bedrooms located in the various
restored village houses. At the center
of the property is a beautiful, terraced
Italian garden that offers stunning
views. Co-owned by a Canadian
(Peter Chittick) and his British
business partner (Craig Miller), the
hotel started out as a single house
(Maison Roche) that was converted in 1989. Over the last 22 years, the pair have purchased and
renovated a further six houses, each almost touching the next, to create this exclusive and unique
hotel complex. No doubt you will enjoy the Provencal cuisine of the chef, who presides over the
property’s Le Restaurant. Lunch is served in La Grange bar or on the terraces. The wine list is
full of Rhone Valley standouts and other top selections from the south of France. The property
also features a heated outdoor pool, which, once again, showcases the great view, and a mini-spa.
There’s also a laptop that you can borrow to check email, and the hosts can suggest walks in the
countryside. This is a great base for day trips in all directions, but you might just want to relax in
