VIDEO ONE: WORKBOARDS FOR DISCOVERY
KEY MATERIALS
• 11x14 mat board
• Glue sticks VIDEO ONE
• Metal ruler for tearing
• Images printed on printer paper
BASIC PROCESS
On an 11 x 14” substrate, adhere an assortment of images
and text together at random with whatever feels loose and
comfortable. Work without thought to picking things that
necessarily go together, match, or tell a story. Live in the
moment. Pick it up, tear it out, stick it down and move on.
Make a fairly even mix of text and images.
TECHNIQUES AND TIPS FOR THIS VIDEO:
Tear your images rather than cutting them. The torn edges
bond more softly and strongly to the surface. Partial objects
are not only OK, they are encouraged.
Use a glue stick rather than acrylic medium or a polymer liquid
glue. The paper will wrinkle and bubble less, and the glue stick
will accept beeswax better if you decide to use it later.
Make lots of asemic writing throughout the process – if you
need more direction about asemic writing, click here for a
bonus video that I did for my Wax and Words eBook. First Postcards: Workboards for Discovery (16:02)
On your 11x 14” surface, mix printed text with your own direct
handwriting in, around, and even over the images.
If you decide to use stamps and a stamp pad, use fragments of
a design rather than a whole stamped object.
