BEFORE YOU GO ON:
BASIC TECHNIQUE - THE POWER OF “VEILING”

A signature technique in my own work (and one I always
teach in my collage workshops) is “veiling” - using thin layers
of pale paint to partially obscure and unite collage elements,
like those two examples below. It pushes and pulls, conceals
and reveals. It’s fun -- and easy.

The more I work with white tempera paint, the more I love
it for this purpose. When it dries, its velvety surface is perfect
for over-marking with graphite or colored pencil, or even
     stamping.

It produces an effect of images and words floating in a cloud-
like mystical environment and joins your elements visually.
Tempera is also a good subsitute for Encaustic Gesso because
it is “wax-frendly” and allows the beeswax/medium mixture to
     bond with the surface.

The video on the next page shows you some basic veiling
     techniques.
