Context

UNEMPLOYMENT

Bhukulani Secondary school is situated in Soweto.

Soweto is characterized by the high rate of
substance abuse, crime and unemployment.

Recently, there was an outbreak of looting of
foreign shops. This could be directly or indirectly

linked to unemployment and poverty.

THE THEORY OF MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES

Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences
proposes that learners have different ways of learning
and acquiring knowledge. Teachers tend to fall into a
routine of considering only the common ones such as

linguistic and mathematical, particularly when
teaching math and languages.

OVERCROWDING

Like any other township schools, Bhukulani receives a
large number of enrollments annually. As a result, the

classrooms are cramped and overcrowded. This
affects the process of learning and teaching as
overcrowding affects the teacher-learner ratio
disproportionately and the distribution of furniture and

resources per learner. This then means that the
amount of resources and furniture will be
disproportionate compared to the number of learners.
