Six Hour Stew

                 1                can  cream of mushroom soup Healthy Request
                 1                can  water
                 1                can  tomatoes -- diced
                 4               tbsp  tapioca
                 1                env  onion soup mix
                 1                tsp  basil
                 1 1/2             lb  sirloin tip roast, trimmed -- cubed
                 3             stalks  celery -- optional
                 1                 lb  carrots -- thickly sliced
                 6                     potatoes -- 1/2-inch cubes
                 2                     onions -- sliced

               In a bowl, mix mushroom soup, water, onion soup mix, tomatoes,  tapioca,
               and basil.  Set aside.

               Place al remainingl ingredients in a heavy roaster and pour mushroom soup
               mixture over all.  Cover with a tight fitting lid and bake at 275 degrees
               for 6 hours.

               DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN DOOR DURING COOKING TIME!

               NOTES : The author of this recipe, Candy Pope, says that she used
                       about 5 onions and 2 quart sized jars of canned tomatoes.
                       She has also made the stew with chicken and it was great.
                       Also it is good without meat.

                       Made this on 8/20/2000, have adjusted the ingredients to
                       the way Les & I like stew -- more potatoes, little or no
                       celery.
