Key Insights Continued
• Stroke: SMH has a lower LOS for stroke patients (5 day median) vs. SJHC ( 8 day median).
SMH also performs EVTs which are a funded QBP. Both sites have designated Stroke beds in
Gen Med. Stroke volumes at Providence have declined by 8% over the past 3 years.
• Due to increasing complexity and longer LOS across SMH and SJHC, Mental Health inpatient
volumes are decreasing at both sites despite growth/demand in the TC LHIN and Ontario. A
coordinated approach including Emergency, Outpatient and Community services could be
explored.
• The Network will have a large presence Chronic Kidney Disease Management (Nephrology).
• There is an opportunity for a Palliative Care strategy across the network. Providence’s volumes
continue to increase while SJHC & SMH have declining volumes. Different models of care exist
across the sites. Beds are coded differently at SJHC/SMH vs. Providence which could impact
HBAM funding.
