Inpatient Overview - Volumes & Referral
Patterns
• General surgery volumes have grown by
0.5% in Ontario. SJHC volumes have
increased by 2% while SMH volumes
have increased by 7%. SJHC and SMH
both make up 2% of Ontario market
share.
• As a proportion of inpatient volumes,
General Surgery makes up 8% of SJHC
and 7% of SMH activity.
• This service includes a mix of urgent and elective admissions in which differences exist across sites.
SJHC has 50% urgent and 50% elective cases while SMH has 62% urgent and 38% elective cases.
• Top volumes are derived from TC LHIN patients. SJHC derives significant volumes from the North East,
Mississauga Halton, and Central LHINs while SMH volumes are from Central East, Central, and South
East LHINs. Both SMH and SJHC are bariatric centres that treat patients from across Ontario.
• Nearly all patients from both sites are discharged home with or without support services. Last year no
patients from SJHC were referred to Providence and 3 patients were referred from SMH.
