Inpatient Overview - Volumes & Referral
Patterns
• General Medicine volumes have grown by
7% in Ontario; volumes have increased
by 26% at SJHC and 1% at SMH. SJHC
and SMH make up 3% and 2% of Ontario
market share respectively.
• As a proportion of inpatient volumes,
General Medicine makes up 22% of
SJHC and 16% of SMH activity.
• Top volumes are derived from TC LHIN patients; followed by Mississauga Halton and Central LHIN.
SJHC derives significant volumes from Mississauga Halton LHIN, representing 16 % of total General
Medicine volumes.
• Overall, 70% of patients are discharged home from both sites, with 1/3 of these patients going home with
support services. SJHC transfers 18% of patients to other institutions for continuing care while SMH
transfers 15%.
• When patients are discharged to another institution, SJHC refers most frequently to Runnymede while
SMH refers most frequently to Bridgepoint. Providence received 5.6% of patients transferred from SMH in
16/17 while SJHC did not transfer any patients to Providence.
• Geriatrics volumes have been excluded from this analysis. There are different service
models employed across SMH and SJHC; further exploration is required.
