Romans 7:8-11, But sin, taking occasion by the commandment,
wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law
sin was dead. For I was alive without the law once: but when the
commandment came, sin revived, and I died. And the
commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto
death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived
me, and by it slew me.
Truly the debt of sin and the condemnation of the law by the
knowledge of sin came by Adam, but the keeping of the law, the
blood of animals or paying of tithe could not pay the debt.
Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no
flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of
sin.
Psalms 40:6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine
ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou
not required.
The law of God is good and holy and will never bring evil; it is
the evil of sin that is the problem. Cain and Able both made
sacrifices to God, but God would not receive Cain’s sacrifice,
for the same reason he told Adam not to eat of the tree. God
requires obedience. Cain’s sacrifice was a righteous intention,
but his disobedience made it sin. Abel’s sacrifice was a type and
shadow of the Lamb of God paying the debt of Adam’s sin. He
did not know it, he was just obeying God. For God was
providing a sacrifice for himself, the same as he provided for
