SUGGESTIONS FOR WRITING LESSONS
Most teachers will wish to plan their own writing lessons. These are suggestions
which can be adapted, if required. Teaching in grammar lessons may be referred to
as and when they are relevant. Extend the children’s vocabulary and write challenging
spellings on the board. Discuss the importance of legible handwriting and punctuation
though clearly the main emphasis is on creative or factual writing.
Term Objectives
1. To appreciate the beauty of language.
2. To distinguish between fiction, non-fiction, creative and factual writing.
3. To write a serial story with chapter headings, detailed description, careful
grammar and punctuation.
4. To learn how to set out a letter on paper and on screen.
5. To write an email with appropriate greeting and ending.
6. To write instructions in order and with clarity.
7. To write the Christmas story either by playing the role of a character or as a
newspaper reporter.
8. To posture the children to pray for creativity in writing.
LESSONS 1-2
Fiction, non-fiction, factual and creative writing
Vocabulary: - Text (any kind of writing – stories, articles, letters, instructions)
Fiction (not real or true – stories, plays, poems)
Non-fiction (real or true – newspapers, magazines, recipes, instruction
books, educational books, letters, game rules, etc)
Factual writing (basic facts/non-fictional writing)
Creative writing (more descriptive words used, fictional or non-
fictional writing)
Show the children a display of fiction and non-fiction writing. Differentiate between
factual and creative writing. Let the children create either an individual or a class
newspaper by writing short, factual accounts of events in their holidays. It could be
called ‘Holiday Highlights’.
