FACTUAL/NON-FICTIONAL WRITING AND CREATIVE WRITING
Factual
The four of us in our family travelled through the night to visit Uganda. The flight
took eleven hours. On arrival at Entebbe airport we noticed that we had landed near
Lake Victoria. We were met by friends who drove us to Kampala where we stayed for
two weeks. The roads were busy with many people walking about. It was hot while we
were there. There were lots of smells and lots of dust. We felt very strange as white
people among so many dark people but everyone was very friendly.

What a long flight we endured! It seemed an endless eleven hours getting from
London to Uganda. At Entebbe airport we were excited to catch our first glimpse of
Uganda. There in the bright sunshine were palm trees fringing the blue waters of
Lake Victoria. In the distance were the rolling green hills. Our friends were waving
madly from the window of the airport terminal. We excitedly yelled, “We made it!”
In the car we passed swaying trees and prickly bushes which looked as though an
artist had splattered paints all over them, so bright were the beautiful flowers. The
thirty mile drive to Kampala was an amazingly varied experience as we drove in the
bright sunshine.
On the roads we saw colourfully dressed women carrying pots or baskets on their
heads as they walked gracefully along. A man wobbled past with a huge fish balanced
on his bicycle. Another man was struggling as he pushed an enormous bunch of
bananas on his bike. Dark-skinned people thronged everywhere, leaving us feeling
very strange as white people. It was a tidal wave of humanity! There were honking
horns and dusty smells to get used to in the streets. All the people of Kampala
seemed so unbelievably friendly. What an introduction to Uganda!
