ACTION STATIONS!
Truth to Teach (Source)
Acts 17:28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’
God has created us with the ability to move and to perform actions to enable us to
care for his world.
Verbs are doing or being words.
Every sentence has a verb.
Present tense verbs describe present actions.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review work on nouns from last term. Remind the children of the importance of using
correct words in our communication.
2. Explain that the words we are going to learn about are found in every sentence.
They are doing or being words.
3. Ask the children if they know which is the shortest sentence in the Bible. (‘Jesus wept.’
John 11:35). Establish that the sentence has two words, a noun and a verb.
Change it to ‘He wept.’ Ask if it makes sense. Talk about not every sentence having a
noun but every sentence having a verb. Explain that ‘He’ stands for Jesus but is a
pronoun – standing in the place of the noun.
4. Go around the class asking the children to say their name with a verb following it, e.g.
Jose runs. Thomas plays. Talk about present tense verbs.
5. Let the children stand up and give them lots of actions/commands/verbs to follow,
calling the session ‘Action Stations!’ as in the armed forces, e.g. jog, jump, skip, hop,
leap, turn, run. Stress that these are all verbs.
6. Let the children try the worksheet or else list a verb beginning with most letters of the
alphabet in their books. Nouns could be added to make each verb part of a two-word
sentence.
