PHRASES AND CLAUSES

A clause is a group of words which contains a verb; it is part of a sentence.
Longer sentences are made up of phrases and clauses which provide more
information.
Clauses and phrases do not have to make sense on their own.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Write the word clause on the board and ask the children what this word means.
If they cannot answer the question, encourage them to use a dictionary.
A clause is part of a sentence but differs from a phrase in that it contains a verb.
The children may remember it if the letters CCTV (closed-circuit television) are used
– clauses contain the verb.
3. Give lots of examples of sentences containing a clause.
E.g. Dad read the paper when he got home.
Seeing the bull, the child yelled.
The gardener, who is retiring, cuts the grass.
Jenny watched the television because she liked the programme.
Emphasise that the main part of the sentence (called the main clause) makes sense
on its own but any clauses added may or may not make sense on their own.
4. Let the children take sentences out of a box to add clauses to them (see separate
sheet). The clauses may be put at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of the
sentence.
5. Take time to distinguish between a phrase and a clause, giving lots of examples.
6. Remind the children of the connectives/conjunctions they learnt about in Y4 which
may be used to join clauses as well as short sentences, e.g.
and but if so because though as so when then unless although
