Y5 Summer Term Part 1. CW Lesson 4
SEMI-COLONS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Semi-colons give a break in a sentence, longer than a comma but shorter than a colon.
Semi-colons are used in complex lists, e.g. It eats slugs and snails; flies and bugs.
Semi-colons are used to link sentences instead of conjunctions.
Semi-colons may precede conjunctions.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Talk about the various punctuation signs with which the children are familiar, e.g. full
stops, question marks, exclamation marks, speech marks, commas and apostrophes.
3. Introduce the semi-colon by drawing it on the board. Ask the children if they know
when this sign is used.
4. Give them the challenge of finding some in their Bibles, especially in Psalm 139.
5. Gather back to draw conclusions as to where semi-colons are used (see above).
6. Let the children complete the worksheet,
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should now recognise a semi-colon and understand its function.
2. They should be encouraged to try to use it occasionally in their written work.
