Y5 Summer Term Part 2. CW Lesson 7
ONOMATOPOEIA
Truth to Teach (Source)
Re-envision the children about learning grammar.
Onomatopoeia means words that sound the same as the noises they describe.
Onomatopoeia adds interest to creative writing.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Re-envision the children about learning grammar. Clear communication enables us to
form relationships with other people. God communicated with us by sending his Son,
Jesus Christ, to earth because he wanted to communicate directly with us. We can
communicate with God through prayer.
2. Write the word onomatopoeia on the board. Ask the children if anyone knows what it
means. Give them three minutes to make as many words from it as possible.
E.g. on, mat, pet, pat, not, pea, it, at, to, pan, too, toe, pot, apt, eat, moat,
note, meant, moon, pit, man, men, peat, meat, neat, opt, main, pain
Explain the meaning as words that sound the same as the noises they make.
3. Hand around a bag with picture cards on them (see separate sheet). Let the children
suggest noises made by the things on them.
4. Hand around a second bag with words written on them. Let the children suggest
objects or creatures which could make these noises (see separate sheet).
5. Let the children complete the worksheet or find other onomatopoeic words from a
dictionary.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will have been introduced to onomatopoeic words which they could use to
add interest to creative writing.
