Y5 Summer Term Part 1. CW Lesson 5
PUNCTUATION DETECTIVES
Truth to Teach (Source)
1 Peter 5:8 ‘Be sober, be vigilant…’
Just as we need to be alert in our spiritual lives, so we need to be alert in other
areas of our lives.
Punctuation serves the listener and reader of language by bringing order to language.
Review previous teaching on punctuation.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Remind the children of the importance of being alert in every area of our lives.
Talk about detectives looking for clues to help them to solve mysteries. Likewise, it is
necessary for them to look for clues when checking their writing.
3. Encourage the children to recall all the punctuation signs they have used in the past.
• Full stops
• Question marks
• Exclamation marks
• Speech marks
• Commas
• Apostrophes
• Semi-colons
4. Put lots of examples on the board to reinforce past teaching.
5. Let the children try the worksheet. Although an answer sheet is given, there are
occasions when there is a choice of punctuation.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be better equipped to punctuate their writing using signs they
have learnt.
2. They will have been reminded of the need to be alert in every area of their lives.
