Science Y1 – Managing materials – week 1
MASSES OF MATERIALS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Hebrews 11:3 ‘By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s
command, so that what is seen was made out of what was unseen.’
The world God has created is made up of a variety of materials.
God has made man to make things too, only man cannot create from nothing; he uses the
materials God has hidden in the earth.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Attempt to make a doll’s dress out of a tissue and sellotape. Take a shoe box and
ask for a boxful of water.
Can’t find a saucepan, suggest cooking potatoes in a small bucket. What’s wrong?
The wrong material. A material is what something is made of.
Things are made of many different materials; you must choose the right material
for the thing you are making. You need to manage your materials.
2. Who was the first One to make anything? What did He make? How did He do it?
What did He make it out of? Hebrews 11:3.
The world God has created is made up of a variety of materials.
God has made man to make things too, only man cannot create from nothing; he
uses the materials God has hidden in the earth!
3. Different materials go into the making of a building.
Perhaps refer to David’s desire to build a house for God, and the preparations he
made, amassing stone, iron nails, cedar logs, bronze, gold, silver, precious stones,
marble. (1 Chronicles. 22-29) Show a picture if possible.
Perhaps show pictures of homes in far off places, where local materials have been
used in building them.
4. What about here? Split the class into two groups with an adult to scribe, and ask
each group to list as many different materials as they can think of to be found in
their current building - used in the actual building and to be found inside it.
5. Gather and report back. We are going to look at four of these materials in more
detail in this topic: wood, metal, plastic and rubber.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
To help the children appreciate the power and deity of God the Creator, and to realise
the variety of materials He has made available to people to make things with.
