Science Y1 – Managing materials – week 2
FOCUS ON WOOD
Truth to Teach (Source)
God has richly furnished us with a beautiful and extremely useful building material: wood.
Way to Work (Means)
1. After God had made light and the sky, He formed the dry land and created
plants. What are the biggest plants God made? [Trees] In Genesis 2:9 we
read that God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground – trees that were
pleasing to look at and good for food.
How many different kinds of trees can we name together?
2. In time people discovered that trees were also useful. They discovered wood,
and realised that it is a wonderful material for making things with. Wonderful
wood! From each different type of tree comes a slightly different type of wood.
3. Show different samples of wood. How is wood different?
Colour. Grain. Hardness.
4. Let’s find out some more about wood.
• with a magnet.
• in a tank of water
• with a match
Divide the class into groups, and have them spend 5-10 minutes at each
experiment. It is best to have an adult overseeing each experiment, and
obviously so where matches are concerned.
5. Children record what they have found out on the worksheet. Some children
might go on a ‘wood walk’ with an adult, spotting where wood has been used
around the building.
6. Gather. If all these things are made of wood, how come we have not run out of
trees yet?
God has provided supplies of wood which is an excellent material for building
many things from. It is man’s responsibility to look after the trees and make
sure there are always fresh supplies of trees. Replanting. Oaks may take 200
years to grow; conifers 50 or 60. Recycling paper protects supplies of trees.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
For the children to be more aware of the characteristics and possibilities of wood,
and for the need for careful stewarding of this resource
