Science Y1 – Managing materials – week 6
USING MATERIALS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Genesis 1:31 ‘God saw all that He had made, and it was very
good.’ God is the Master Craftsman.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Recap: • God made the world out of nothing.
• When He made the world, He hid particular materials so that people
would discover these and be able to make things too.
• Some materials were easy to discover: e.g. wood.
• Others less so. Which? e.g. metals, rubber.
• People have discovered how to use oil to make new materials. Which? i.e.
plastic, and man-made rubber.
2. God was a Master Craftsman. He was very good at it. Gen. 1: 31.
He always made things out of the right material. He knows all about materials.
When He told Moses to make the tent of meeting, He described in detail what
things should be made of and what they were to be like! Today, we are going to
pretend that you have to make things and choose the right/ best material for it. God
has put a little bit of His creativity into each of us. [Bezalel and Oholiab. Exodus
31:1-6 - see source concepts for this topic. Encourage the children to look to God in
faith.]
3. What do you think the best material would be for:
• a life-belt?
• a foot-bridge?
• a travel-bag?
Helpful words to write on the board.
floats light strong cheap waterproof
rust holds air paint attractive to look at
Children are to write down what they think and give reasons to justify their choice of
materials. Pictures may be drawn to clarify their answers.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
For the children to apply their knowledge of particular materials. For them to select a
material for a particular object and justify their choice based on what they know of
that material.
