Science Y1 – Managing materials – week 5
RUBBER
Truth to Teach (Source)
God has hidden useful materials in the earth. He has allowed men to discover them and
find ways of harnessing their potential.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Recap: So far we have been looking at different materials.
God has put these materials on the earth. Some are easy to see and use, others
are more hidden - perhaps under the ground. Sometimes man has to do things to
the materials, to make them so that he can use them.
• What materials have we looked at?
• Where do they come from? (Where have they been hidden?) There
are many more. Today we are going to look at rubber.
2. Refer to a display of items made of rubber. What is rubber like? What might its
advantages be? (elastic / stretches / bounces)
Blow up a balloon. What does this tell us about rubber? (It can hold air.) Pour
water into a hot water bottle - Rubber can hold water.
Have a child put on wellingtons and stand in water - Rubber keeps water out.
3. First part of the worksheet.
4. Does anyone know where rubber comes from? Where has God hidden it?

Bark cut – white liquid (latex) collected
This material was called rubber because it can rub out pencil marks.
5. Second part of the worksheet.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
For the children to ‘discover’ more about rubber, learning where it comes from and
appreciating its characteristics.
