In business management, planning involves defining an organization's goals,
establishing strategies for achieving those goals as well as integrating and
coordinating the necessary activities for achieving those goals. With these in
perspective, a skilled manager would consider implementing strategic activities such
as formulating long-term plans, exploring and identifying acquisition opportunities
-- both local and globally. Simply put, planning is setting objectives and determining
how those objectives will be accomplished.
In organizing, the manager prepares schedules and budgets, delegates
authority when appropriate, and coordinates research and development (R&D)
activities. In this capacity, the manager prepares and disseminates weekly staff
schedules so that other managers and team members are well informed of their time
requirements and scheduling expectation -- relating to determining -- what needs to
be done, how it will be done, and who is to get it done. To this end, an experienced
manager is empathetic of an employee’s request for time-off to attend to a personal
matter, rather than trying to exert her authority over the employee.
In human resource management (HRM), staffing refers to the recruitment,
selection, development and compensation of talents (administrators, senior
managers, as well as mid-level and junior managers). “Talents,” as written here, does
not include team members (lower level workers) who are not in decision making.
Unlike low-level employees, a high-performer is focused, vision driven and possesses
a sense of direction derived from experience. These attributes enable the high-
performer to visualize as well as recognize the most efficient approach to take to
complete a project. Thus, the high-performer knows what needs to be accomplished
and subsequently, sets goals, prioritizes and organizes these goals to achieve and,
exceeds project’s expectations.
