mocha cappuccino, covers it with a lid, and walks around the mini mart -- looking for
nothing in particular -- simply exercising his legs.
Next, he walks up the Cashier. “That’s all.”
“Hi … That’ll be $1.62, including tax.”
“Here you go,” hands two Lincolns.
“Twenty-eight cents back … Thank you.”
“Thank you,” Alonzo collects his change and takes his exist.
Outside, he gaits to his Jeep, presses the remote, opens the door, and climbs
on board. Inside, he flips the dial on the radio -- searching for an R&B Station -- but
nothing on the airwaves. He switches to the CD player and an upbeat song radiates
from the speakers. He taps his left foot as he rests his eyes. Half an hour later he
cranks the ignition, the SUV roars, he puts it into drive, and gradually pulls out --
heading toward I-49 south ramp.
Lafayette, Louisiana
SUNDAY -- 07:08 HOURS
Alonzo’s lips draw back slightly -- in a self-assurance grin -- while cruising at
60 MPH into Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. Another few minutes, with the guide of the
GPS, he arrives at the 100-block of Journey Lane, an upscale subdivision in Lafayette
-- featuring a great home on cul-de-sac. He pulls into the driveway, gradually comes
to a stop, kills the ignition, and glances -- with appreciation -- at neighboring homes.
