THINGS EVERY SOROR SHOULD KNOW
It was in 1907 that Ethel Hedgeman, a Howard University
student leader and dreamer, envisioned a woman’s
organization comprised of the best and the brightest who felt
highly compelled to better themselves and their community.
Ethel Hedgeman pursued her dream and on January 15, 1908,
her vision became a reality with the founding of our revered
sorority.
Each of us has promised to continue Ethel Hedgeman-Lyle’s
dream and pledged to make Alpha Kappa Alpha supreme in
service. In his book, The Servant, James C. Hunter said, “The
only one among you who will be truly happy are those who will
have sought and found how to serve.” Over 111 years, Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority has indeed “sought and found how to
serve.”
Likewise, through the years we have cherished the image of
Alpha Kappa Alpha… what it is, and how it must be imbedded
in each of us. In the following section, we have addressed only
a few of the age-old expectations that have evolved in regards
to 1) the promises we made; 2) our ritualistic mandates; 3) our
traditions, both international and local; 4) our public image and
5) our continuing obligations as Alpha Kappa Alpha women.
Our success and survival as an organization of stature, will
depend upon our ability to embrace a set of common standards
intended solely to perpetuate that glorious image of Alpha
Kappa Alpha that first led each of us to seek membership.
Having acquired that goal, we assumed some continuing
responsibilities to protect our heritage and remain true to our
pledge, while Exemplifying Excellence.
