                                                          CHARITY WEEKEND
Every year for the past 18 years, Chobham Heath SMBC
in Surrey have held a charity weekend taking place at the
Chobham community centre, which is the club’s home.
The aim is to raise money for the Wessex Children’s Hos-
pice (Naomi house and Jack’s place) and over the years
we have raised in excess of £35,000 for this very worthy
                                             cause.
48 bowlers take part each day (96 in total over the
weekend) in teams of 4 and are guaranteed 5 games during each day. The games
are played in a round robin format of 2 groups of 6 teams and the winners of each
group then play off in the final. The event provides people with a full day of compet-
itive and enjoyable bowling whilst, at the same time, raising money for a very worthy
               cause.
We do not only raise money by collecting playing fees of £8.00 per person but
we have a large raffle each day (usually in excess of 90 prizes on each day). We also
have guess the name of the “teddy” on each day of the weekend and a whiskey raffle
on both days. The event is supported not only by players from surrey but also from
               Hertfordshire, London, Kent and Hampshire.
This year we raised £2,370 for the hospice which, in these difficult times is a
great amount and we would like to thank all those who took part and, of course, the
members of Chobham Heath SMBC who helped on both days, providing raffle prizes,
food for the lunches and also stepping in to play when players dropped out. A big
thank you should also go to John Salter, who has been the scorer over the weekend
since the event started and also manages to bowl on both days.
We believe all those who took part enjoyed what was a fun day but very com-
petitive event and we hope to see them all again next year. Next year’s event will take
place on the weekend of the 7th and 8th September 2013 and all bowlers are welcome
on a first come first served basis.
