The opening round of the Pairs held only one real shock
and that was in group “B”. Norway’s Ronald Anderson &
Freddy Forland were 8 - 12 down with just two ends to
play against Ireland’s Sean & Kevin Conroy but a three
and a two gave the Norwegians a 13 - 12 victory.
England’s Sam Harvey & Emily Thomas had no
mercy on their Canadian newcomers and won 33 - 7.
Wales Cennydd & Dafydd Howell romped home 19 - 5
against Belgium’ Romain Papen & Louis Beckers. Swe-
den’s Jonas & Joel Hager beat the Netherlands pair of
Frans Smulders & Robbie Roberts 13 - 6.
In group “A” Gary McNabb & Gerard Conroy had
an easy win over their Welsh opponents 17 - 8. India’s
Brian Nelson & Sashi Patel beat Canada 20 - 9 and in
the all Scandinavian clash, Norway’s Lisa Kristen
Frantzen & Tone Boe recorded an 18 - 7 victory over
Sweden’s Fredric Larson & Lars Hanson. Belgium’s Mar-
tin & Rene Theunissen scored four on the last end of
their match against Italy’s Giovanni Cataldi & Antonio
Ronaldi but still lost 16 - 13.
In the second round of group “B” matches Norway

beat the Netherlands 19 - 12 and Belgium beat Canada’s
Jonas & Joel Hager
Phil Thornton & Ralph Hewitt 15 - 10. Ireland recovered
from their opening defeat with a thumping
20 - 9 result over Wales Arwel Morgan &
Martin Harries. England came unstuck
and lost 14 - 9 to Sweden.
In Group “A” Sweden scored a 22 -
6 win over India. Ireland turned on the
style against Canada and won 22 - 5.
England were pushed hard by Italy until
a four near the end got them home 17 -
12. in a very tight match against Belgium,
three successive singles guaranteed a
15 - 11 win for Wales.
Completing the first days play in
group “B” Wales greater experience
helped them blow Canada away with a

Conroy Gerard Conway Sweden recorded a big 21 - 5 vic-
tory over Belgium and England beat Nor-
way 17 - 11. Completing the round Ireland beat the Netherlands 29 - 4.
In group “A” Sweden shocked Ireland with a 12 - 8 win and little did they know that the final a day
later would be a re-run of this match. Canada’s Patrick Cote & Dave Burrows bounced back with
a narrow 9 - 8 result. Despite a late flourish, England were never really in the game against Norway
and went down 14 - 9. Finishing the day, Wales beat Italy 19 - 6.
Four rounds followed on day 2 and another two on day three as Group “A” had an extra pair..
Victory and defeat on the final ends came to some and few surprises along the way. When all the
