BARRY RAINBOW 9
BARRY RAINBOW
TROPHY
TROPHY
The Shirley Woods and the Shirley Chestnuts
teams combine each year, once the Heritage
league season has finished to compete for the
Barry Rainbow Trophy.
This year’s winners were Derek Meaking
and Richard Edwards and the runners up were
Helen Dawson and Gayle Hawtion.
The Barry Rainbow Trophy has been estab-
Winner Derek Meaking lished for over 10 years and the format of the com-
and Richard Edwards petition was changed two years ago. Each pair
has to play every other pair over 11 ends in a mini league, spread over a 4 month period.
The top four pairs then progress to a semi-final play-
off with the winners of each semi-final playing each other
in the Final. 2 points are scored for a win, 1 point for a
draw and 0 points for losing.
This year there were 12 pairs. The top four pairs
were Derek Meaking and Richard Edwards (19 points),
Naresh Parmar and Lesley Parkes (18 Points), Helen
Dawson and Mary Doughty (14 points) and Alan Davies
and Howard Hemming (14 points). The competition is very
exciting because the players are of similar abilities.

OPEN SINGLES
OPEN SINGLES
This singles competition attracted local bowlers
from all over the South West and as expected
was seriously contested by all who took part
with 8 groups of four alternating play on the four
mats fitted in to the hall.
Finishing top of her round robin group and
then fighting through the knockout stages, June
Balbinski faced Danny Gooding in her semi-
final. Danny had also finished top of his group
and was in outstanding form and closed out the
Organiser Brab Hallowes with winner semi with 10 shots without reply, finishing the
Danny Gooding and runner-up match with two ends unplayed.
Lorraine Axtell Lorraine Axtell, who had finished second in
June’s group edged through her quarter final 8 -
5 after being 2 - 5 down, finishing 1 - 2 - 3 four an unassailable 8 - 3 lead with one end to go.
In the other semi-final Lorraine faced Bob Weafer, who narrowly got through his group in
second place on shots difference. In his quarter final he was 4 - 5 down going into the last end
but finished with a three for a 7 - 5 victory. However, in the semi-final Bob could not find an an-
swer for Lorraine Axtell’s running game and eventually lost 3 - 10 with the last end unplayed.
In the final Danny Gooding was still in top form and a four on the second end gave him a 4 - 2
lead over Lorraine but by sixth end the match was all-square at 5 - 5. At this point Danny found
an extra gear and with one end to go took an unassailable 10 - 5 lead to take the Ottery singles.
