A small startup company hired a manager as its
third hire. Several months later, it became
apparent that the company had only enough money
to pay its rent, electric, and telephone bills for four
to six months, but not enough to pay its three
employees. The senior management, including this
employee, discussed the possibility of closing the
company but agreed that they would keep the
company alive by deferring any salary payments
until business improved and the corporation could
afford to pay them. The manager later learned of
the provisions of the Wage Act and asked for
payment. Eventually, the company paid her, one
