So: we have been talking about the law, but


        relationships matter at least as much as the legal



        principles we have tried to outline for you in this book.


        If you have to terminate an employee, if you are faced


        with a decision about how to handle an employee illness


        or disability, if you receive a complaint about bullying or


        harassment in the workplace, or if you are questioned


        about wage and hour issues, I would encourage you not


        only to re-read this book, but also to take a moment, and


        perhaps a deep breath, depending on the circumstances,


        to consider how you can deliver the news of your


        decision in a way that is most likely to be perceived as


        fair and compassionate. Even if you don’t have to- I


        promise that will save you money and aggravation.
