impact. This would be especially true for those who
are dealing with acute mental health issues and
should be seen at least on a bi weekly basis.
If these changes were implemented it is likely
there would be a decline in the suicide rate at the
University of Waterloo. It is a perfect storm for
student suicides given the conditions of many who
attend our school. They are far from home, under
immense pressure to succeed, and have little or
insufficient support.
There is also the question of how many students
do no utilize the services on campus due to the
stigma attached to mental illness. I believe this
stigma keeps some from seeking help that
desperately need it. School is unbelievably taxing
and causes sleep deprivation. which can lead to all
sorts of mental health problems. Perhaps suicide
could be also prevented if some students did not feel
so stigmatized and sought the help and medication
and treatment they needed.
