At Health Services you can walk in and be seen by
a doctor on the same day. Although people often
complain about the wait times, this is a system
should be implemented to treat very acute cases
and those who need immediate counselling.
Instead, as mentioned before, there are very long
wait times between counselling appointments. Your
world can be turned upside down overnight and
there should be a safety net on campus for students
when this happens
.
Mental Health Services should be commended
on their standard of care. I have used their services
for several years now and I have yet to have a
negative session with any of their therapists. The
same cannot be said for the region of Waterloo,
which only has one psychiatric hospital. From
personal experience the quality of staff and care
when compared with the professionalism of the
university is night and day. That is to say that we
have an excellent system in place but it needs to be
massively expanded to prevent more tragedies.
